Volleyball Outlasts Phoenix College
In the final match of the Roughrider Invitational presented by Marriott Hotels the host Roughriders needed all 5 sets to beat the Bears of Phoenix College. Yavapai started strong winning the first set 25-21 but dropped sets 2 and 3 by scores of 19-25 and 27-29. In the do or die 4th set Yavapai played their best volleyball of the match beating Phoenix 25-14. The Roughriders carried that momentum into the do or die 5th set and started with a lead that they never gave up. The match ended on an attacking error by Phoenix with Yavapai 15 and Phoenix 9.
The win was the 2nd 5 set victory of the day for Yavapai and the 3rd consecutive victory overall. The Roughriders improved their overall record to 7-6 but remain 0-2 in ACCAC competition.
Highlights of the match include a match high 26 digs by freshman outside hitter Kelsey Park and 24 digs by freshman libero Brooke Donnelly. Freshman setter Kayle Park collected 39 assists and 10 digs. Offensively Yavapai was also led by Kelsey park with 21 kills and only 7 erorrs leading to a hitting percentage of .237. Both sophomore middle blockers, Braxton Fenter and Kendy Klump attacked effectively with .333 hitting percentages. Fenter collected 8 kills and Klump 4. Freshman right side hitter Paige Hamilton and freshman outside hitter Amanda Eno both contributed 6 kills for the match. Overall Yavapai our hit Phoenix .139 to .055.
Yavapai returns to ACCAC action on Wednesday September 10th as the Matadors of Arizona Western travel to Prescott for a 7:00 pm match. The match will be a “BLACKOUT MATCH”. Everyone is encouraged to wear black in support of Yavapai and there will be a serving contest at intermission for black YC Volleyball t shirts.
