Big MLS Weekend for Former Roughriders
Justin Meram (Yavapai 2007, 2008) scored two second half goals to led the Columbus Crew to a 3-0 Major League Soccer victory over Chivas USA on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Colorado Rapid goalkeeper set an MLS record for taking down Alan Gordon (Yavapai 2000, 2001) of a clear scoring opportunity 34 seconds into the match and receiving the quickest ejection in league history. In addition to setting up the first goal, Gordon tallied the second goal of the match.
In other alumni news, two-time World Cup participant and current professional footballer in England, Roger Espinoza (Yavapai 2005, 2006), spoke to the 2014 Roughriders during the lightning delay at Phoenix College on Thursday night. The alumni homecoming weekend is scheduled for Saturday, October 11. Many of the former Roughrider greats, including members of the first Yavapai College national championship soccer team from twenty-five years ago are planning on attending.
