Riders Tame Cougars
The Roughrider baseball team swept a road doubleheader from South Mountain Community College Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix, 7-6 and 8-4. Yavapai improves their overall record to 26-25 and 15-21 in the conference standings. Despite the sweep, YC is eliminated from the playoff hunt as a result of a Cochise College sweep over Paradise Valley Community College Tuesday in Douglas.
In the opener, Yavapai took an early 2-0 lead over the Cougars but relinquished the lead in the bottom of the fourth giving up 6 runs. YC pulled within 1 posting three runs in the bottom of the fifth and scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning for the victory.
Stephen Carabajal was stellar from the mound throwing 6.2 innings allowing 2 earned runs and striking out 5 batters. Haden Shipman pitched the final out for the save.
Offensively, Luke Doyle was 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 1 run batted in. Brock Hartley was 3 for 4 with 1 runs scored and 2 RBI’s. Austin Orth was 1 for 3 with 3 runs batted in.
In the second game, Yavapai used a six-run 8th inning to pull away from the Cougars for the victory.
Akoni Arriaga was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Doyle and Austin Paschke each homered.
Andrew Mendoza threw 4 innings for the victory.
The regular season finale will take place on Saturday, April 26th. YC will play host to Eastern Arizona College. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM. It will also be the 2013-14 student-athlete recognition day.
