Playoff Hopes Dim With Sweep
Mathematically, the Roughrider baseball is still in the hunt for the fourth and final playoff spot despite dropping a doubleheader to league league leader #13 ranked Central Arizona College (39-13, 24-10) Saturday afternoon in Casa Grande, 4-2 and 6-1. YC is now 13-21 in the conference standings and 24-25 overall. YC is 3 games back of the final playoff spot with four games remaining in the regular season.
In the opener, the Yavapai offense could only muster three hits on the game but was tied with the Vaqueros going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Central Arizona pushed the game winners across plate in their half of the inning. Nick Sagendorf pitched a fine game going the distance allowing only seven hits and striking out one.
In the night cap, the Roughrider offense was stagnant only connecting on seven hits. Starting pitcher Will Jones took the loss despite only allowing six hits and four earned runs.
Yavapai will attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive on Tuesday, April 21st at South Mountain Community College (32-18, 22-11). The Cougars swept a doubleheader from the Roughriders in February, 7-4 and 11-6 in Prescott. Tuesday’s doubleheader will start at 12:00 PM. YC returns to Roughrider Park on Saturday, April 26th for the regular season finale against Eastern Arizona College. That day will also be Roughrider Student-Athlete Recognition Day with the YC Athletic Department honoring those student-athletes that stood out during the 2013-14 school year. The events will start at 12:00 PM.
