Roughriders Soccer Finishes Third Nationally
After qualifying for their 18th NJCAA Final Four appearance, the Roughrider soccer team came within one goal of their 14th trip to the NJCAA National Championship Match with a 1-0 loss to top ranked Iowa Western Community College Friday night in Tyler, Texas. YC concludes their season with an 18-3-6 overall record. All three of the Roughrider losses were determined by 1 goal. Iowa Western remains perfect at 24-0-0 and moves to the National title game Saturday evening against the winner of the Tyler Junior College/San Jacinto College match.
With the rain falling throughout the match and the temperature hovering at 39 degrees at kickoff, the Roughriders managed to outshoot the Reivers but relinquished the lone goal in the 13th minute of the match. The cardiac kids had their chances in the final minute hitting the post twice but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Yavapai completes their 25th season as the NJCAA Region I Champions, the NJCAA West District Champs and a third place National Tournament finish.
Tournament Notes: For their efforts, sophomore Milan Popovic and freshman David Mack were named to the 2014 NJCAA Men’s Soccer All-Tournament Team. Next year’s national championship will be held in Prescott and Prescott Valley, Nov. 18-23, 2014.
Ruff Notes: Yavapai is 26-4 all-time in temperatures under 45 degrees…these two teams faced one time before in Kansas City in 2005. YC won the match, 3-0… four sophomores (Milan Popovic, Matthew Paine, Lucas Lavanaway, Asa Goldsmith) wore the Roughrider jersey for the final time Friday night.
