The Roughrider softball team needed one win Saturday to advance to their 6th straight NJCAA Region I postseason. The lady ballers did more than that by sweeping a doubleheader over #2 ranked Phoenix College (41-15, 33-15), 3-2 and 14-6. YC enters the playoff tournament as the #4 seed and will play Central Arizona College in the first round in Casa Grande beginning May 3rd.
Down 2-1 in the 7th inning of the first game, Brooke Eifert-Pancamo hit a solo home run to force the game into extra innings. YC loaded the bases in the eighth inning and Jade Yost hit a run-scoring single chasing Mita Cortez home for the game winner. The victory clinched the playoff spot for the Roughriders.
Brandi Heimburg, Jade Yost and Lauren Gourdin each had 2 hits. Heimburg hit a solo bomb in the third inning.
Aundria Zuniga-Romero threw the complete game for her 29th victory of the year.
In the second game, YC scored at least one run in each inning of the run rule shortened game. Yavapai pounded 15 hits highlighted by 6 for extra bases. Jade Yost was a perfect 4 for 4 with 4 RBI’s, 3 runs scored and 2 home runs. Eifert-Pancamo was 3 for 3 with 5 runs batted in, 2 runs scored and her 2nd home run of the day.
Yavapai will be looking for their 5th NJCAA Region I Division title. The winner of the Region tournament will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament beginning on May 15th in St. George, Utah.
