Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Cougars

The Roughrider softball team swept a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix over South Mountain Community College, 4-3 (8 innings) and 8-0. YC is now 36-17 overall and 32-14 in the ACCAC race with 2 games remaining in the regular season.

YC took extra innings to get the victory in the first game and won the game on a passed ball in the 8th inning. Per NJCAA rules, if the game goes into extra innings, a runner starts at second base. Mita Cortez was placed on second base and was sacrificed to third by Kasey Oliver. Cortez scored the game winner on a passed ball on the next batter. South Mountain went down in their half of the inning stranding a runner at third.

Aundria Zuniga-Romero got her 28th victory from the mound throwing all 8 innings. Brandi Heimburg and Sam Wilson each were 2 for 4. Heimburg scored 2 runs and Wilson had 2 RBI’s.

In the second game, Zuniga-Romero threw her 9th shutout of the season allowing only 3 hits.

Offensively, Cortez paced the Riders with 3 hits, 1 run and 1 RBI. Hannah Hill was 1 for 1 with a run scored and three runs knocked in. Wilson was 1 for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Yavapai concludes the regular season on Saturday entertaining the NJCAA DII #2 ranked Phoenix College. The twinbill will start at 12:00 PM.
