Softball Splits With Gauchos
The Roughrider softball team split a doubleheader with Glendale Community College Saturday afternoon in Glendale. Yavapai dropped the first one 3-1 and bounced back in the nightcap to win, 9-1. Yavapai is now 34-17 on the year and 30-14 in the ACCAC race.
The YC bats started the day silent as they managed only 4 hits against the Gaucho pitching. The Roughriders scored a lone run in the second inning but remained scoreless the rest of the game. Kasey Oliver was 2 for 3. Val Luera was 1 for 2 with the only run scored for the Lady Batters.
Aundria Zuniga-Romero threw well enough to win striking out 10 and only giving up 1 earned run but was tagged with the loss.
In the late game, the bats came alive with 13 hits. YC used a five-run third inning to blow open a 1-0 lead. Mita Cortez and Sam Wilson each were 3 for 4. Cortez had a home run and double and 2 RBI’s. Zuniga-Romero aided her cause going 2 for 4 with a home run and 4 runs batted in.
Zuniga-Romero threw all seven innings striking out 7 and surrendering 9 hits.
YC plays at South Mountain Community College on Tuesday, April 23rd. YC swept a twinbill from the Cougars earlier in the month, 7-5 and 12-4. The games will start at 12:00 PM.
