YC Sweeps Aztecs; 2nd Time in 6 Days
The Roughrider baseball team used some late game heroics to finish a sweep of Pima Community College Thursday afternoon in Tucson, 11-2 and 14-12. YC improves to 39-10 overall and 22-10 in conference play, 3 games behind league leaders #8 Central Arizona College (25-7) and Cochise College (25-7). Yavapai has 6 games remaining in the regular season.
In the opener, Michael Howard pitched 5.2 solid innings to get the victory from the mound. Offensively Austin Murphy and Tim Arakawa hit home runs. Alexis Olmeda added two hits.
In the nightcap, after scoring 2 runs in their half of the first inning, YC gave up the lead allowing 10 runs in the first two innings. Yavapai scored 5 unanswered runs to cut the deficit to 10-7. Pima scored two runs in the sixth to increase their lead to 12-7, however the Cardiac Kids responded with 5 runs in the 8th to tie the game including a 3-run home run by Murphy, his second of the day. YC scored 2 runs in the ninth for the game winners.
YC pounded out 18 hits en route to the victory led by Krysthian Leal who was 3 for 3 with five runs batted in and two runs scored. Arakawa and Drew Turbin were 3 for 5. Stephen Carbajal was 3 for 6 and Brandon Matthews was 2 for 4.
Kamalu Kamoku got the victory in relief pitching a perfect two innings.
Yavapai returns to the friendly confines of Roughrider Park on Saturday, April 20th entertaining, #8 ranked and league leader Central Arizona College. The Roughriders and the Vaqueros split a doubleheader in Casa Grande, 3-2 and 2-4. Saturday’s twinbill will start at 12:00 PM.
