Baseball Splits With Apaches
The Roughrider baseball team split a road doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Douglas against league leader Cochise College, 12-6 and 5-12. YC is now 34-7 overall and 17-7 in the ACCAC race. Cochise remains in a tie for first place with a record of 34-10 on the year and 20-6 in the conference standings. The Apaches are tied for first place with Central Arizona College, who split a doubleheader at Arizona Western College on Saturday, 1-3 and 4-2.
The Roughrider nine used a seven run 7th inning to cruise to the victory in the first game of the twinbill. Sophomore Peter Lenstrohm pitched 6 innings to keep his record perfect at 4-0, scattering 3 hits and striking out 4.
Humberto Aranda led the way offensively. The Prescott native was 3 for 4 with 5 runs batted in. Drew Turbin was 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBI’s. Michael Howard and Stephen Carbajal were 2 for 4 each with 2 runs knocked in.
In the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game, Cochise scored three runs to take the lead, 7-5 and tacked on 5 more runs without an answer from the Roughriders for the decisive victory.
Matt Southard took the loss throwing only 3 innings. Offensively, YC managed only 8 hits; six of those hits were by Tim Arakawa and Turbin, both going 3 for 4.
YC returns to the friendly confines of Roughrider Park on Tuesday, April 9th playing host to the Matadors from Arizona Western. Yavapai split a doubleheader with the Matadors in Yuma earlier in the season, 1-2 and 3-0. Tuesday’s games will begin at 12:00 PM.
