Huge Sweep For Riders
The Roughrider softball team gained ground today in the ACCAC standings with a pivotal doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon over Arizona Western College, 6-1 and 5-2. Yavapai improves to 24-15 overall and 20-12 in conference play. AWC falls to 29-15 on the season and 20-10 in the ACCAC.
Yavapai jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning and added another run in the second. The Matadors scored their only run in the fourth inning and YC tacked on another run in the sixth.
Aundria Zuniga-Romero was stellar from the circle for the Riders throwing a complete game 1-hitter striking out 8.
Jade Yost and Valerie Luera each had two hits. Yost hit a solo home run. Luera and Sam Wilson each had two runs batted in.
In the nightcap, Arizona Western jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their half of the first inning but YC countered with 2 runs in their half of the inning. Western tied the game in the top of the second inning and YC took the lead for good with a single run in the bottom of the second and two more in their half of the third.
Offensively, Yost was 2 for 3 with her second home run of the day. Kasey Oliver was also 2 for 3.
Zuniga-Romero got her 2nd win of the day throwing 5.1 innings scattering four hits, giving up two runs and striking out 6.
On Tuesday, April 2nd, Yavapai plays host to GateWay Community College (2-26, 0-26). In February, the Roughriders swept a twinbill from the Geckos, 12-3 and 11-0. The doubleheader will start at 12:00 PM.
