Softball Splits With Eastern

The Roughrider softball team got a much-needed split Tuesday afternoon with the visiting Gila Monsters from Eastern Arizona College, 4-6 (8 innings) and 6-3. YC is now 22-15 overall and 18-12 in conference play. Eastern Arizona has a 29-8 overall mark and 23-7 in the ACCAC.

YC had some late game heroics to force the game into extra innings. Down 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Brooke Eifert-Pancamo homered to centerfield to cut the lead in half. Jade Yost walked and moved to third on a double by Aundria Zuniga-Romero. Brandi Heimburg drew a walk to load the bases and Alma Cortez delivered a run-scoring single to tie the game. Eastern Arizona scored two in their half of the extra frame and Yavapai went down in order to close the game.

Cortez had two hits for the Roughriders and Zuniga-Romero took the tough-luck loss.

The Roughrider nine jumped out to an early lead scoring all of their runs in each of the first four innings. The Gila Monsters scored two runs in the third and one in the sixth and loaded the bases in the seventh, but Zuniga-Romero got the final two hitters to popup to the infield to finish the game.

Heimburg was 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI’s. Sam Wilson was 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 runs batted in. Taylor Riesgo was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Sarah Thompson got the start from the circle and did not allow a run on 1 hit and 1 strikeout. Zuniga-Romero got the victory in relief.

Yavapai plays host to fellow ACCAC Division I opponent Arizona Western College on Saturday, March 30th. Earlier in the season, Yavapai dropped a doubleheader to the Matadors, 6-5 and 14-10 in Yuma. Saturday’s twinbill will start at 12:00 PM.
