Baseball Sweeps Pumas
The Roughrider baseball team kept pace with the league leaders Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep over Paradise Valley Community College, 11-4 and 5-4. Yavapai improves to 30-5 on the year and 13-5 in the ACCAC race. Paradise Valley falls to 13-21-1 on the season and 9-11 in conference action.
In the opener, YC fell behind early as the Pumas put 3 runs on the board in their first at bats. YC responded with 3 runs in their half of the second to tie the score. Paradise Valley scored 1 run in the bottom of the second to take the lead, however YC scored 8 unanswered runs to cruise to the victory.
Kyle Toth was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in. Aaron Blair was 2 for 4 with two RBI’s. Stephen Carbajal and Drew Turbin each had two hits. Michael Howard and Humberto Aranda each drove in two runs.
Jacob Doyle pitched six innings to get his fourth victory of the season.
In the nightcap, once again, YC fell behind early with Paradise Valley posting three runs in the first inning. YC got on the board with 2 runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead in half and scored three runs in their half of the 8th to take the lead for good.
The Roughrider offense was quiet with only 6 hits. Brandon Matthews was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Toth was 1 for 3 with a pair of runs knocked in.
Chance Adams (2-0) was stellar in relief of starter Ryan Petersen. The freshman right-hander threw 3 innings allowing no hits and no runs with 6 strikeouts. Kamalu Kamoku pitched the final inning for his 4 save in as many tries.
YC plays a home-and-home on Friday and Saturday with Glendale Community College. On Friday, YC hosts the Gauchos in a nine-inning affair beginning at 2:00 PM. On Saturday in Glendale the first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM. Earlier this season, YC beat Glendale in a non-conference game, 1-0.
