Baseball Shoots Down Thunderbirds
The Roughrider baseball team swept an afternoon doubleheader Tuesday over the visiting Thunderbirds from Mesa Community College (11-7, 1-6), 4-2 and 11-1. Yavapai is now 12-3 overall and 5-3 in ACCAC action.
Peter Lenstrohm pitched a gem in the opener to get his first victory of the year. The Chaparral High School product took a no-hitter into the top of the fifth inning before surrendering a hit. Lenstrohm threw the full 7 innings striking out 6 and giving up only 2 hits.
Offensively, YC scored all 4 of their runs in the opening frame with the big blow coming on a double from Humberto Arando which scored two runs. YC scored two more runs in the inning on a two-run Mesa error.
In the nightcap, YC pounded MCC pitching with 20 hits, the most in a single game this season for the Roughriders. Aaron Blair had the big bat going 2 for 5 with a triple and a home run and 5 runs batted in. Drew Turbin and Krysthian Leal each had 3 hits and Blair, Tim Arakawa, Alexis Olmeda and Chris Burks all had 2 hits a piece.
Matt Southard threw 5 full innings allowing 1 hit and striking out 1 for the victory.
YC plays host to Arizona Christian University in a non-conference affair on Thursday, February 28th. The single nine-inning game will start at 2:00 PM.
