“Cardiac” Riders Win Again
The one thing that head coach Ryan Cougill knows about his Roughrider baseball team is that they never give up. That was evident in Monday’s thrilling 5-4, 12-inning victory over the visiting Artichokes from Scottsdale Community College. With the win, Yavapai improves to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in ACCAC action. Scottsdale falls to 9-2 on the year and 1-1 in the conference standings.
The game was a pitching duel with both starting pitchers throwing shutouts through the first six innings. However, Scottsdale drew first blood in the top of the seventh inning pushing two runners across the dish.
Yavapai College’s version of the “cardiac kids” began the comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Austin Murphy tied the game up with a towering 2-run home run and YC added two more runs to take a slim two-run lead.
In their half of the ninth inning, Scottsdale scored two runs to tie the score. YC failed to score in their half of the inning forcing the game into extra frames. Both teams had opportunities to win the game but the score remained tied until the bottom of the twelfth inning when Drew Turbin lined a base hit down the third base line glancing off of the third baseman’s glove scoring Tim Arakawa who walked to begin the inning giving the Roughriders the come-from-behind victory.
Jordan DePonte pitched four innings to get the victory. DePonte scattered two hits and struck out 2 opponent batters.
Humberto Aranda and Arakawa led the Riders offensively going 3 for 5 each. Austin Murphy was 2 for 3 with 2 runs batted in and Michael Howard was 2 for 5 with a run scored and 1 RBI.
These same two teams will play on Tuesday, February 19th to finish the two-game series in a nine-inning game in Scottsdale. The first pitch will be thrown at 2:30 PM.
