Baseball “Walks-off” With Victories
The Roughrider baseball team remained undefeated with a doubleheader sweep Wednesday afternoon over #17 Salt Lake Community College, 4-3 and 10-8. Yavapai owns a 7-0 overall record and begins ACCAC action on Saturday at South Mountain Community College.
In the first game, YC used a three-run fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Salt Lake rallied in their half of the seventh with two runs but fell short in their comeback.
Peter Lenstrohm got the start and threw 4 scoreless innings striking out 4. Kamalu Kamoku got the victory in 1 inning of work.
Offensively, Humberto Aranda had a double and knocked in two runs. Alexis Olmeda was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
YC came out flat in the nightcap and their bats struggled all game until the final inning. With the Roughriders down 8-2 in the ninth with one out, Kyle Toth reached base on a walk to begin the comeback and came around to score the 1st run of the inning on a single by Aaron Blair.
Later in the inning, the Riders loaded the bases after a Krysthian Leal walk. Olmeda hit a double to left center field plating two runs to cut the deficit to 8-5. Aranda, pinch-hitting for Austin Orth, hit a double down the right field line scoring two more runs.
Salt Lake walked two more runners to load the bases bringing Toth to the plate for the second time in the inning. On the first pitch of the at bat, the Chaparral High School product lined a shot to left centerfield clearing the fence and the bases for the walk-off grand slam.
Brandon Matthews got the victory throwing one inning and striking out two.
Toth was 3 for 4 on the game with 4 runs batted in. Olmeda and Aranda were both 1 for 1 with 2 RBI’s.
Conference action starts on Saturday, February 16th at South Mountain Community College. The twinbill starts at 12:00 PM. YC returns to Roughrider Park on Monday, February 18th playing host to Scottsdale Community College. The single game will start at 2:00 PM.
