VB Adds Assistant
The Roughrider volleyball program has announced the hiring of Prescott native Mandy Mellencamp as assistant coach for the 2012 volleyball season. She replaces Rachel Williams who is pursuing other coaching opportunities.
Mellencamp graduated from Prescott High School in 2008 and continued her academic and athletic career at Mississippi State University. At PHS, Mandy was named to All-Region teams her sophomore, junior and senior years and was named to the All-State Team her senior season. She was also named as the 2007-08 Prescott High School Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
At Mississippi State, Mellencamp was the only freshman to start in all 31 matches finishing third on the team in kills and second in blocks. Unfortunately a season ending injury cut her sophomore season short. As a junior, she bounced back to play in 25 of MSU’s 31 matches. For all four years Mellencamp was named to the SEC (Southeastern Conference) Academic Honor Roll.
“I am super-duper excited to be back in my hometown and am looking forward to winning a lot of games at YC”, commented Mellencamp.
Head coach Matt Cohen added, “It is a great opportunity to get someone local and of Mandy’s ability to assist us here at Yavapai. She will be a great asset to our recruiting as she has great insight about Prescott.”
Mandy is the daughter of Ross and Ann Mellencamp of Prescott and is a third cousin to pop star John Mellencamp.
