Baseball Comes From Behind To Take Series Lead
The Roughrider baseball team came from behind to win a nine inning thriller over Arizona Western College in the opening game of a best-of-three series in the NJCAA Division I Region I Playoffs. YC won the game 9-8 to take a 1-0 advantage over the Matadors. Yavapai is now 39-18 on the year. AWC falls to 33-23 on the season.
The offense was dominant on the day on both sides of the diamond. Each team combined for 25 hits on the day, 10 for extra bases.
The Matadors dominated the first five innings of the game taking a commanding 8-3 lead. However, YC battled back to cut the score to 8-6 and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a Krysthian Leal two-run home run.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Yavapai took advantage of two Western miscues with Josh Tate knocking in the winning run on a single to centerfield to complete the comeback.
These two teams play on Friday, May 4th in an elimination game for the Matadors. If the Roughriders lose tomorrow, a third and final game will be played on Saturday with the winner advancing to the championship series and the loser going home. The first pitch for Friday’s game will be thrown at 2:00 PM.
