BASEBALL WINS CROWN

The #13 Roughrider baseball team swept a Saturday doubleheader on Saturday over Eastern Arizona College, 6-4 and 10-0 to lay claim to the 2012 ACCAC title. For Yavapai, that marks the 13th conference crown in the program’s storied past and the 8th under the direction of head coach Sky Smeltzer. The victories give the Roughriders claim to home field advantage throughout the NJCAA Region I playoffs.

In the opener, Tyler Urps and Jonathan Rodriguez each homered to propel the home team critical victory to pull them even with the Vaqueros from Central Arizona College. Matt Smith got the victory in 6.1 innings pitched.

YC put the second game on ice early with five first inning runs. Aaron Blair was a perfect 4 for 4 and Krysthian Leal was perfect from the plate going 3 for 3 with three RBI’s. Ryan Petersen went the distance to gain the victory.

Yavapai begins NJCAA Region I Division I playoffs on Thursday in a best of three series against Arizona Western College. The Roughriders won 3 of 4 games this year against the Matadors. The single game on Thursday will start at 2:00 PM. Friday’s first pitch will be thrown at 2:00 PM and, if necessary, Saturday’s game will begin at 12:00 PM.
