Riders Split With Geckos
The Roughrider baseball team split an ACCAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon with GateWay Community College. YC won the first game 3-2 and dropped the nightcap 8-7. Yavapai has an overall record of 35-17 and 25-9 in conference play.
The Roughriders made the most of their six hits in the back and forth affair. Jonathan Rodriguez scored the first run after Kyle Young was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
GateWay took the lead in their half of the 2nd inning on four singles off of starter Matt Smith.
YC took the lead for good in the fifth inning with Rodriguez scoring on a wild pitch.
Rodriguez and Jordan Negrini each had two hits. Smith (9-1) threw six strong innings striking out seven batters. Blair Goldsack tossed the final inning his fourth save.
GateWay won the late game on a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Yavapai led 7-2 after six innings but the Geckos scored six unanswered runs for the split.
Krysthian Leal had two hits and two RBI’s for the Roughrider nine. Aaron Blair took the loss (2-2) from the mound.
Yavapai plays host to Pima Community College on Tuesday, April 24th. The Riders split a doubleheader with the Aztecs in March in Tucson, 12-0 and 9-13. Tuesday’s twinbill will start at 12:00 PM.
