YC Outlasts Phoenix

The Roughrider baseball earned a hard-fought doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon over the visiting Bears from Phoenix College, 8-7 and 16-10. Yavapai is now 24-11 overall and 15-4 in ACCAC play. The visitors fall to 11-24 on the year and 3-16 in conference action.

In the first game, the Riders jumped out to a commanding 6-1 lead in the first two innings of play. However, aided by a grand slam, the Bears stormed back to tie the score at 7. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Yavapai loaded the bases and sophomore third baseman Jordan Negrini lined a single to right field for the walk-off victory.

Negrini was 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and four runs knocked in. Kyle Young was 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI’s.

Ryan Petersen (4-3) threw the final three innings of the game to garner the victory. The freshman from Rancho San Diego scattered four hits and struck out five.

Yavapai came from behind in the nightcap as Phoenix put up 6 first inning runs off of Roughrider starting pitcher Billy Darras. YC responded to tie the game and take the lead in the fourth inning, 9-6. Phoenix regained the lead in the sixth inning, 10-9. The Roughrider nine took the lead for good by scoring seven runs the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings.

Aaron Blair earned the victory on the hill throwing 6.1 innings, scattering 8 hits and striking out six batters.

Prescottonian Humberto Arando was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Negrini, Austin O`Such, Kyle Toth and Ryan Wagner each had two hits. Wagner had a home run and four runs batted in.

Yavapai will entertain Scottsdale Community College on Thursday, March 29th in a single nine-inning affair. YC beat the Artichokes a week ago in Scottsdale 6-3. Thursday’s event will start at 2:30 PM.
