Baseball Splits Twinbill
The Roughrider baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Mesa Community College Saturday afternoon, 3-4 and 15-12. YC is now 21-11 overall and 13-4 in ACCAC action.
In the first game, Mesa took and early 2-0 lead after two innings and added one run in each of the successive innings. Yavapai rallied in their half of the fourth inning scoring three runs to cut the deficit to one, but the YC hitting went cold the final three innings of the game.
Austin O`Such led the Riders with two hits, two runs batted and one run scored. Drew Turbin and Timothy Arakawa each added two hits.
Ryan Petersen (3-3) took the loss surrendering four runs in 3 and 2/3 innings pitched.
In the late game, both teams combined for 33 hits and 27 runs as the Roughriders earned the split with a high scoring 15-12 victory. YC opened up to a 12-3 commanding lead after five innings of play. The Roughrider nine held on in the final four innings as the Thunderbirds flew back into the game with nine runs to Yavapai’s three.
Aaron Blair led the offensive attack going 5 for 5 with a home run and three RBI’s. Austin O`Such, the reigning ACCAC Player of the Week was 1 for 3 with grand slam. Timothy Arakawa, Tyler Urps and Drew Turbin had three hits a piece.
Peter Lehnstrom got the victory scattering six hits and three runs.
Yavapai plays host to Phoenix College on Tuesday, March 27th. Earlier in the seasons, YC beat the Bears in a non-conference affair 5-3 in Phoenix. The twinbill will start at 12:00 PM.
