The Roughrider baseball team won the 2012 Valley of the Sun Spring Tournament Saturday with a 9-8 victory over the Tejanos from El Paso Community College. Yavapai is now 19-10 on the season.

Through five innings on Saturday it looked as if the Riders would have an easy trip to the championship. YC led 8-3 with four innings to go, however El Paso scored three runs in their half of the seventh and added another run in the eighth.

Jonathan Rodriguez hit what proved to be the game winning home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Tejanos scored a run in the ninth to cut the deficit to one and threatened to gain the lead as they loaded the bases. Aaron Blair got the final two outs on a pop up to second and a called third strike.

Freshman Billy Darras pitched a solid 5 innings for the victory and Blair got the save. Josh Tate led the Roughrider offense going 3 for 3 with three RBI’s. Timothy Arakawa was 2 for 3 with two runs knocked in. Jordan Negrini and Rodriguez each had two hits and an RBI.

Yavapai plays a home and home series with Scottsdale Community College on Tuesday and Wednesday. Scottsdale hosts the Roughrider nine on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 PM and YC returns the hospitality on Wednesday for a 2:30 PM start time.
