Softball Keeps Streak Alive
For second consecutive week Pinon named ACCAC Pitcher of Week. Also named Player of Week.
The top ranked Roughrider softball team kept their winning streak alive by beating GateWay Community College Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix 8-2 and 13-2. Yavapai’s winning streak is now at 15 and have won 26 of their last 27 outings. YC is now 33-4 overall and 22-2 in conference action.
Sophomore pitcher Estela Pinon got the victory in the first game scattering two hits and striking out 15 batters. Additionally, the University of Arizona bound Pinon was named ACCAC Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week. Along with the pitching award, the Tucson native was named conference Player of the Week for her efforts from the plate. Last week she went 8 of 11 at the dish, scoring 4 runs and driving in 9 runs. From the circle, she pitched in 3 games, earning 2 wins and a save. In 14 innings, she struck out 21 batters to increase her national strikeout lead.
Offensively for the Roughriders in game one, Brittany McCray was a perfect 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Brandi Heimburg and Pinon were 2 for 4.
In game two, Mel Willadsen was in complete control pitching all seven innings and striking out eight Gecko batters. Pinon added three more hits with a triple and four runs batted in. Asleigh Seipel was 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI. Miraya Montiel was 2 for 4 and Tessa Fanning was 1 for 3 with four runs knocked in.
Yavapai entertains the Wranglers from Odessa College on Wednesday, March 14th in a non-conference affair. The twinbill will begin at 12:00 PM.
