Softball Takes Over First
In a battle for first place, the Roughrider softball team captured the top spot with a doubleheader sweep over Pima Community College Saturday afternoon at Bill Vallely Field, 6-2 and 4-1. Yavapai improves to 32-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACCAC race. Pima falls to 23-7 on the year and 18-4 in the conference standings.
In the opener, Estela Pinon (13-1) was dominate from the circle as she allowed only one hit on the day (a two-run home run) and struck out 13 opponent batters.
The YC batters did the damage in the third inning when they scored four runs on four hits capped off by Pinon’s two-RBI single. YC added one more run in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth frame.
Pinon was 2 for 2 from the plate. Alma Cortez was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Ashleigh Seipel was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI and Kasey Oliver was 1 for 3 with a triple and a run scored.
In the nightcap, Mel Willadsen (11-3) went the distance for the victory. She allowed one unearned run and struck out three. Brandi Heimburg, Alexis Lawton and Seipel were each 2 for 3. Pinon was 1 for 3 with two RBI’s and Miraya Montiel was 1 for 3 with a home run.
YC continues conference play on Tuesday, March 13th at GateWay Community College before returning home for a non-conference affair against Odessa College, TX on Wednesday, March 14th. Both doubleheaders will start at 12:00 PM.
