Baseball Outlasts Gila Monsters
The Roughrider baseball team came from behind to beat the Gila Monsters from Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher Friday afternoon, 6-5. YC improves to 15-8 overall and a league leading 11-2 in ACCAC play. EAC falls to 11-13 on the year and 3-10 in the conference standings.
Yavapai opened the scoring in the first inning with a single run. Eastern Arizona evened the score in their half of the second inning and took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth YC regained the lead with four runs only to see the Gila Monsters retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Krysthian Leal singled in Jordan Negrini for the game winner and Blair Goldsack shut the door for his 3rd save of the year.
Matt Smith started the game and threw five and two-thirds innings allowing five runs. Billy Darras threw two frames to get the victory.
Offensively, Austin O`Such was 3 for 5; Leal was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI’s. Aaron Blair was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs batted in. Negrini was 1 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.
These same two teams will play on Saturday, March 10th in the final game of the two-game series. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
