Softball Spanks Matadors
The Roughrider softball team swept a home doubleheader against fellow Division I conference opponent Arizona Western College on Tuesday, 9-1 and 15-6. Yavapai improves their overall record to 30-4 and 18-2 in the ACCAC. The Matadors fall to 15-19 on the season and 8-12 in the conference standings.
In the first game YC run-ruled the visiting Matadors. Estela Pinon went the distance picking up her 12th victory on the year. The Tucson native threw a two-hitter and struck out 7 and walked one.
Offensively, Pinon helped her cause by going 2 for 3 with a home run, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Alexis Lawton was 1 for 2 with a homer and three RBI’s. Kat Macias and Kasey Oliver were each 2 for 3.
The mercy rule applied in the second game for the visitors as the Roughrider nine scored 15 runs for the second time this season. Mel Willadsen got the victory from the circle pitching five innings, scattering seven hits and striking out 2 batters. Pinon pitched the final inning for the save.
Pinon was a perfect 3 for 3 in the nightcap scoring two runs and knocking in two more. Miraya Montiel was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBI’s. Ashleigh Seipel was 2 for 4 and three runs scored. Tessa Fanning hit the walk-off home run to end the game.
Yavapai entertains the conference leader Pima Community College on Saturday, March 10th beginning at 12:00 PM. The doubleheader could possibly be a preview of the NJCAA Region Championship. In the last three years, Pima and Yavapai have played for the region crown with YC winning all three times. The Aztecs played at Phoenix College on Tuesday.
