Softball Rounds Up Gauchos
The Roughrider softball team swept a Saturday doubleheader against Glendale Community College (3-15, 2-12), 3-2 and 6-2 to improve their overall mark to 23-4 overall and 12-2 in ACCAC action.
Mel Willadsen pitched a gem for the first game victory throwing a complete game. The Mesa native scattered five hits and struck out seven Gaucho batters. Alma Cortez, Brandi Heimburg and Estela Pinon each had a run batted and Alexis Lawton was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
In game two, freshman Kat Macias got the victory in six innings pitched. Pinon got the final three outs for the save. Macias helped her cause from the plate with a home run, two RBI’s and two runs scored. Cortez, Heimburg and Lawton each got two hits in the game.
Head coach Lisa Parks commented, “Girls found a way to win. Great job by the pitching staff and timely hitting today.”
YC returns to the diamond on Tuesday, February 28th at Chandler/Gilbert Community College. Game time will at 2:00 PM. The home opener for the Roughriders will be on Saturday March 3rd at Bill Vallely Field beginning at 12:00 PM against South Mountain Community College.
