Riders Split On The Road
The Roughrider baseball team split a road doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Case Grande against the NJCAA pre-season #1 ranked team Central Arizona College (12-7, 3-3). YC won the first game on a shutout 6-0 and fell in the nightcap 7-5. Yavapai is now 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the ACCAC.
Freshman pitcher Matt Smith (3-1) was the star of the first game tossing a one-hitter and striking out six opponent batters in seven complete innings. Smith kept the Vaquero bats at bay until the Roughrider offense stirred in the sixth inning scoring two runs and crossing four runners in the seventh inning. Jordan Negrini was the batting hero going 1 for 4 with three RBI’s. Timothy Arakawa was 1 for 3 with one run batted in and two runs scored.
In the late game, YC held a 5-2 lead after their half of the sixth inning. CAC cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored four unanswered runs in the seventh for the victory and the doubleheader split.
Jordan Blaylock (2-1) took the loss while the Roughrider offense only managed seven hits.
YC plays at South Mountain Community College (12-4-1, 5-1) on Tuesday, February 28th. Both teams share the lead in the ACCAC standings. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
