Baseball Completes Sweep
The Roughrider baseball team beat the visiting Gauchos from Glendale Community College Saturday afternoon in Prescott, 5-2 to even their overall record to 5-5 and improve to 2-0 in ACCAC action.
Yavapai opened the scoring on the day in the second inning on a fielder’s choice RBI by Austin Blair chasing home Drew Turbin who had walked and advanced on an errant pick-off attempt at first.
YC extended the lead in the sixth inning to 4-0 thanks in part to two Gauchos errors, however, GCC cut the lead in half on a two-run home run in their half of the eighth inning. The hope was short lived for the opponent as Jonathan Rodriguez squelched the opponent’s confidence with a shot down the right field line for his second home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Ryan Petersen got the victory pitching 7 and 2/3rds innings scattering five hits and striking out four. Blair Goldsack pitched a perfect ninth inning to get his first save of the year.
Rodriguez and Krystian Leal each had two RBI’s. Timothy Arakawa and Kyle Toth each collected two hits.
Yavapai continues conference play on Tuesday, February 21st at Cochise College and returns home for a non-conference affair on Wednesday, February 22nd entertaining Thompson Rivers University out of Canada. The first pitch will be at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott.
