Former Roughrider Leads Team To State Title

Jose Corona, former Roughrider soccer standout and long-time Head Soccer Coach at Cortez High School guided his Colts to the Arizona State High School Soccer Championship with a 1-0 victory over Coronado High School last night in Gilbert. As a college freshmen, Corona anchored the Yavapai College defense en route to the 1990 NJCAA National Soccer Championship, Yavapai’s first of seven national titles. He was the first of 15 Roughriders inducted into the NJCAA National Soccer Hall of Fame. As a college senior, he also led the University of Illinois-Springfield to the 1993 NAIA National Championship. In addition to his coaching duties, Corona is a history and foreign language teacher at Cortez High School.
