Baseball Takes Doubleheader
The Roughrider baseball team had a good weekend sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday in Phoenix to improve their overall record to 3-5. YC got their first shutout victory of the season with a 5-0 tally over GateWay Community College in Phoenix and outlasted the Coyotes from Chandler/Gilbert Community College in the afternoon, 9-6.
In the opener, freshman Matt Smith was stellar from the mound throwing eight innings, allowing two hits and striking out six batters.
Jonathan Rodriguez provided the punch offensively for the Riders despite having only one hit. The sophomore outfielder knocked in three of the five Roughrider runs. Kyle Toth and Austin O`Such each had two base knocks.
In the second game, Yavapai amassed 12 hits including 4 for extra bases. Rodriguez was 2 for 4 including his first home run of the year. Timothy Arakawa, Humberto Aranda and Tyler Urps had two hits apiece.
Jordan Blaylock got the victory on the hill surrendering 2 runs in three innings pitched. Matt Southard pitched the final two frames to get the save.
YC opens ACCAC play on Friday, February 17th at Glendale Community College in a single nine-inning game. The following day, the Roughrider nine will play their home opener against that same Glendale team.
