Baseball Splits Friday

The Roughrider baseball team got their first win of the year Friday morning with a 5-3 victory over fellow conference foe Phoenix College but lost the nightcap to Glendale Community College, 3-2. YC is now 1-5 on the young season.

In the opener, Yavapai opened the scoring on the day plating 2 runners in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning. Phoenix College got on the board in the fifth inning on back-to-back-to-back singles. YC added an insurance run in their half of the eighth inning and PC launched a threat in the bottom of the ninth scoring two runners before Roughrider pitcher Peter Lehnstrom closed the game with a strikeout.

Phoenix College out-hit the Roughrider nine eight to seven, but the Bears stranded 11 runners on base.

Freshman infielder Drew Turbin went a perfect 2-2 at the dish with 2 runs knocked in.

Freshman pitcher Blair Goldsack got the victory on the mound pitching seven innings, scattering 6 hits and striking out 6 batters. Goldsack threw the final two innings to get the save.

The Yavapai runners swiped six bags on the day with Aaron Blair, Kyle Toth, Jonathan Rodriguez, and Kyle Young with one stolen base and Jordan Negrini had two stolen bases.

In the second game, Ryan Petersen was the hard-luck loser as he went the distance surrendering only three runs including the game-winner in the eighth inning. Timothy Arakawa had two hits and drove in the lone two runs for the Roughriders. YC managed only three hits on the afternoon.

Saturday, YC will play at GateWay Community College (11:00 AM) and Chandler/Gilbert Community College (3:00 PM).
