Roughriders Denied Title
Pima Community College (16-6-1) defeated Yavapai College 2-0 for the NJCAA Region I Championship Saturday evening at Ken Lindley Field in Prescott. The loss was only the Roughriders 40th loss in their 23-year history and only their 9th loss at home (244-9-1), however it ended the season for YC. Yavapai concludes the 2011 season at 19-1-3. Pima advances to the West District Playoffs that will be played in Tucson next weekend.
Pima got their first goal of the match on a corner kick in the sixth minute of play and iced the game with a score in the 78th minute. Yavapai had scored 109 goals on the season but was shutout Saturday night for the first time all year.
Yavapai was hosting their 21st region title match in their storied history and was in search of their 20th region crown as well as their 68th championship overall. The last time that YC lost the Region Title was in 1999 when Pima beat the Roughriders 2-1 in overtime.
