VB Gets Huge Win
The Roughrider volleyball team found their groove after a disappointing loss Friday night to beat fellow D-I opponent Arizona Western College Saturday afternoon in Yuma, 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 26-28, 25-22). YC is now a half game behind the Matadors for a playoff spot with 4 games remaining in the regular season. YC is 13-13 overall and 6-6 in conference play. AWC is 9-8 overall and 7-6 in the ACCAC.
Yavapai set the tone in the first set by dominating the play at the net. The lady spikers led the entire game.
In the second set, YC was down 19-21 before Jordan Lopez serve four consecutive points to take the lead that was never relinquished.
The third set was a back and forth duel with neither team leading by more than 3 points. AWC finished the third game with a service ace.
In the final game, Yavapai took an early lead that ballooned to six points. The Matadors made a late surge but YC held strong to take the victory.
Head Coach Matt Cohen had a balanced attack on the night led by MacKenzie Hamilton with 15 kills, 12 digs and 2 aces. LeAnna Lloyd had 16 kills and 1.5 blocks. Alexa Markel directed the offense with 29 assists and 2.5 blocks.
YC returns to the court on Wednesday, October 19th at Scottsdale Community College. The first serve will be at 7:00 PM. After that match, Yavapai will conclude the regular season with three straight home events beginning on Friday, October 21st against league leader, Eastern Arizona College.
