Big Win For Spikers
The Roughrider volleyball team came up big Wednesday night with a victory over D-II #12 ranked Chandler-Gilbert Community College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 28-26). YC keeps their playoff hopes alive with a 5-5 conference mark and a 12-12 overall record.
In the opening game with the score tied at 12, YC seized control behind the solid hitting of Lauren Bevan and Liz Culhane. In the next game, service errors almost cost the lady spikers the win, but fortunately the opponent was not much better in that category. With the score tied at 25, LeAnna Lloyd powered a kill by the Coyotes outstretched hands and then YC won the game as the opponent hit a return into the net.
In the final set, Yavapai came from behind in the seesaw affair with Bevan, Culhane and MacKenzie Hamilton providing the offense. Hamilton put the home team up, 27-26 with a powerful kill and Lloyd ended the match with a strong block for the game winner.
Bevan and Hamilton each had 11 kills on the night. Jessica Durbin ran the offense with 24 assists. Jordan Lopez had 2 aces and Lloyd had 3 blocks.
YC continues their playoff chase with a match at Phoenix College on Friday, October 14th and a big D-I match with Arizona Western College in Yuma on Saturday, October 15th. YC fell to the Matadors in September, 3-2 at Walraven gym. Both matches will begin at 7:00 PM.
