Soccer Ties Coyotes

In a battle for first place Tuesday night, the Roughrider soccer team and Chandler/Gilbert Community College settled for a tie in a game suspended due to lightning. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Yavapai is now 5-0-2 overall and 4-0-2 in ACCAC action. Chandler/Gilbert is 5-1-1 overall and in league play.

The Coyotes came into the match in first place with a two-point lead over the Riders in the league standings. No ground was gained with Tuesday night’s tie. However, the Roughriders still hold a game in hand.

Chandler/Gilbert drew first blood finding the back of the net in the 43rd minute of play and took that lead into halftime. Shortly after intermission, the Roughriders found themselves down a man after drawing a red card early in the half. Playing with 10 men, YC got the equalizer in the 77th minute on a goal by Stuart Bryant assisted by Kyle Morris forcing the match into overtime.

Overtime rules require two extra periods of 10 minutes each. However, play was suspended with 2:44 remaining in the first overtime due to heavy lightning in the area. The storm did not cease and the officials called the match ending it in a deadlock.

Yavapai returns to the pitch on Thursday entertaining Mesa Community College. The match will be played at the Amphitheater in Prescott Valley where YC is 35-0-0. Kick-off will be at 6:00 PM.
