Matadors Stun Spikers
The visiting Lady Matadors from Arizona Western College came from behind Friday night in Walraven Gym to beat the Roughrider volleyball team, 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 19-25, 13-5). YC falls to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Western improves to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACCAC.
Midway through the first game, YC found themselves down 17-21 only to win 8 of the final 9 points to shock the defending NJCAA Division I Region I runners-up. In the second game, Yavapai took a commanding 17-10 lead, their largest of the game, but AWC closed the gap to 20-17. Yavapai held serve for the final four points.
In the third and possible final game, the Roughriders opened up to a seemingly insurmountable 12-5 lead but was outscored 20-5 the remainder of the way to force a fourth game. YC led early on in the fourth game but the opponent bounced back to tie the game at 8 and took the lead on a YC miscue. From that point, Arizona Western found its mojo and dominated the remainder of the way to force a final game five.
In the deciding game, the score was tied on four occasions. The lead changed hands only twice with Yavapai holding the lead for the majority of the game. However, Western tied the game at 12 and took the lead for good at 13-12.
Things do not get easier for Yavapai as they return to the court to entertain the defending NJCAA Division I Region I Champions #10 ranked Eastern Arizona College (5-1) on Wednesday, September 7th. Yavapai lost both meetings with the Gila Monsters last season. The first serve will be at 7:00 PM.
