Roughriders Conclude Season With Split
The Roughrider baseball team finished 2010 regular season with a doubleheader split against Glendale Community College Saturday afternoon in Glendale. YC lost the first game 7-2 and won the nightcap in extra innings 11-10. Yavapai is now 34-22 on the year and 22-16 in the ACCAC.
In the opener, starting pitcher Tony Vocca (9-4) only lasted three innings giving up six runs on seven hits and the offense managed only six hits. Tony Piazza was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Riders.
In the late game, Yavapai needed 10 innings to finish off the Gauchos. Glendale took an early 2-0 lead before YC regained the lead with a five-run 4th inning. However, GCC answered with six runs in the half of the inning. Yavapai retook the lead with a three-run sixth. In the eighth inning, the Gauchos tied the game and YC won the game with a lone run in the 10.
Andrew Walter (6-6) threw the final two innings to get the victory. Offensively, five Roughriders had two hits each. Nolan Clark was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and four RBI’s.
Yavapai opens NJCAA Region I Division I playoff action on Thursday, May 5th on the road against an opponent yet to be determined.
