Softball Extends Streak
The top ranked Roughrider softball team extended their consecutive win streak to 34 games with a doubleheader sweep over South Mountain Community College Tuesday afternoon, 5-3 and 11-3. The streak is the longest in Roughrider softball history. In 2009, YC had a 30-game streak. Yavapai is now 51-2 overall and 39-1 in ACCAC action.
In the opener, South Mountain jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the first inning on two hits and a Roughrider error. YC regained the lead in the third inning on home runs by Vanessa House and Alex Landon. In the fourth inning Yavapai tacked on two more runs on a Sierra Rodriguez home run. The Cougars added a run in the fifth but could get no closer.
Estela Pinon got the victory throwing 4 and 2/3 innings. Pinon scattered five hits and struck out 7 batters. Amelia Willadsen pitched the final 2 innings. Landon was 2 for 2 with two RBI’s and Carli Schiller was 2 for 2.
In the late game, Willadsen got the win pitching a complete game allowing three runs, five hits and striking out five hitters. Yavapai took an early 4-0 lead in the third inning with the big blast coming from Danielle Muniz. The third baseman knocked a three-run home run over the left centerfield fence. South Mountain dropped the deficit to one scoring three runs in their half of the fourth inning. However, Yavapai answered in their half of the fourth with four more runs and added three more runs in the fifth to get the run rule victory.
Sierra Rodriguez was 3 for 4 with the three-run walk off double in the fifth inning. Pinon and house each had two hits.
Yavapai returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 23rd hosting Arizona Western College. Early in the season, YC swept a doubleheader in Yuma, 5-3 and 9-1. Saturday’s event will begin at 12:00 PM.
