Baseball Splits Home DH
The Roughrider baseball team split a home doubleheader Tuesday afternoon with the Aztecs from Pima Community College. YC is now 31-19 overall and 19-13 in ACCAC play.
In the opener, Yavapai found themselves down 11-0 in the first three innings of play. In their half of the third inning, YC scored a single run followed by a three run fourth to cut the lead down to seven. Pima added a run in the sixth inning and Yavapai scored three more times before being retired in the seventh.
Andrew Walter took the loss giving up 7 runs on 7 hits. Offensively, Tony Piazza was 4 for 4 and Ethan Leiter hit the long ball.
In the nightcap, Yavapai scored a lone run in the second inning to provide the only offense by both teams until the sixth, seventh and eighth innings in which YC scored 7 runs to secure the split.
Zak Miller (6-1) got the victory throwing 7 innings striking out six Pima batters. From the plate, Piazza remained perfect on the day with another 4 for 4 performance. Josh Anderson, Tony Vocca, Jordan Negrini and Ashton McCoy each had two hits.
Yavapai returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 23rd entertaining Eastern Arizona College (16-26, 8-22). YC swept a two-game series against the Gila Monsters in Thatcher, 6-5 and 2-1. Saturday’s twinbill will start at 12:00 PM.
