Baseball Gets Well
The Roughrider baseball team hit a rough patch these last two weeks losing seven of their last eight contests. Saturday afternoon, YC righted the ship with a doubleheader sweep of DII #5 ranked GateWay Community College (29-16, 17-10), 5-0 and 10-6. Yavapai is now 30-18 overall and 18-12.
Tony Vocca was the key in the first game as he tossed a 2-hit complete game shutout to record his 8th victory of the year. The Cottonwood native struck out eight batters and walked three.
All of the scoring was done in the first inning highlighted by a two-run homerun by Tony Piazza. Nolan Clark was 2 for 3 and Josh Anderson was 1 for 3 with two runs batted in.
In the nightcap, YC used a four-run first inning to set the tone for the remainder of the game. The Roughrider put at least one run on the board in five of the first six innings and put the game in the bullpen’s hands for the final three innings of play.
Alex Miranda (3-4) got the victory in relief of starting pitcher Robbie Ingram. Kenneth Gallegos was 3 for 4 with four runs batted in. Clark and Anderson each had two hits a piece and Dean Friedberg was 1 for 3 with three RBI’s.
Yavapai entertains Pima Community College (23-21, 13-13) on Tuesday, April 19th at Roughrider Park. Last month, YC split a doubleheader with the Aztecs in Tucson losing the first game 11-1 and winning the second 5-3. Game time will be at 12:00 PM.
