Big Sweep For Softball
The top ranked Roughrider softball team swept a key Division I doubleheader against Eastern Arizona College Tuesday afternoon, 9-1 and 10-2. YC is now 43-2 overall and 31-1 and atop the ACCAC standings. Eastern Arizona falls to 21-22 on the year and 18-18 in conference play.
In the opener, Estela Pinon was stellar from the circle and from the plate. From the mound, the hard throwing right-hander scattered three hits and struck out five opponent batters. Offensively, Pinon was 3 for 3 with a home run, four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Vanessa House and Danielle Muniz each had three hits. Sierra Rodriguez and Alex Landon had two hits a piece.
In the nightcap, each team scored a run in their first at bats, however, YC erupted for nine runs in the second inning to put the game out of reach and all but seal the doubleheader sweep.
Amelia Willadsen got her league leading 23rd win of the year from the mound. She was also 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s. Rodriguez hammered two home runs including a grand slam and Miraya Montiel was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Yavapai plays # Central Arizona College on Saturday, April 9th at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott. Earlier in the season the Roughriders swept a doubleheader in Coolidge, 7-4 and 9-3. Saturday’s first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
