The top ranked Roughrider softball team swept a conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon in Thatcher against Eastern Arizona College, 10-1 and 1-0. Yavapai improves to 37-2 on the season and 25-1 in the ACCAC. Eastern Arizona falls to 15-16 overall and 11-13 in the conference standings.
Behind the arm and bat of Estela Pinon, YC dominated the Gila Monsters in the first game. Pinon (15-1) threw all six innings striking out three batters and scattering three hits. From plate, the freshman from Tucson was a perfect 2 for 2 with a home run and an RBI.
Including Pinon, the Roughriders had four batters collect two hits a piece: Vanessa House (2/4), Danielle Muniz (2/4) and Alex Landon (2/3). Kirsten Lambertson was 1 for 2 with a three-run homer and Miraya Montiel had a two-run pinch hit double.
Pitching was the name of the game in the nightcap as Amelia Willadsen pitched a gem in the shutout. The Mesa native struck out four batters and allowed only three hits to get her league leading 19th victory of the year.
Landon provided the only offense in the game going 2 for 3 with a double and a solo home run, her seventh on the year. Muniz, Pinon and Willadsen each had two hits in the game.
Yavapai entertains Mesa Community College (28-12, 14-8) on Saturday, March 26th. In February, the Roughriders shut out the Thunderbirds in Mesa, 11-0 and 7-0. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott.
