YC Sweeps Bears In Dramatic Fashion

It took late game heroics for the #1 ranked Roughrider softball team to sweep a home doubleheader over fellow conference foe Phoenix College Friday afternoon, 3-2 and 5-4 (8 innings). YC improves to 33-2 overall and 23-1 in ACCAC action.

In the opener, YC took a 3-0 lead posting runs in the first and third innings. Phoenix was held scoreless until the sixth inning when they closed the gap to 1 and left the tying and go ahead runs on base. Starting pitcher Estela Pinon pitched a strong 4 1/3 innings allowing four hits and six strikeouts to get the victory. Offensively, Pinon helped her own cause going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Vanessa House was 1 for 2 with a double, a run scored and two runs batted in.

In the nightcap, both teams traded runs with YC posting two in the second and Phoenix answering in the third. The Bears scored a run in the fourth with Yavapai countering in the fifth with a lone run. The score remained tied at the end of regulation forcing the game into extra innings. Phoenix scored in their half of the eighth inning putting the pressure on YC in their at bats. With the tying runner on second base in Vanessa House and two outs, Alex Landon lined a double to left field to tie the score. Ashleigh Siepl stepped to the plate and immediately lined a ball to the third base line that glanced off of the opponent’s glove that scored Landon for the victory.

Pinon pitched the final three innings to get her second victory of the day. Starting pitcher Amelia Willadsen helped her cause going 2 for 3 with a home run and three runs batted in and Siepl was 2 for 3 with a run knocked in.

Yavapai takes a break from league play on Saturday, March 19th to participate in the Central Arizona College Spring Break Tournament. YC will play #15 Midland College, TX (11:00 AM) and Howard College, TX (1:00 PM). The games will be played at Paul Mason Park in Casa Grande. The Roughrider will play at Eastern Arizona College on Thursday, March 24th beginning at 12:00 PM.
