Softball Pounds Geckos To Win Home Openers
It is good to be home for the Roughrider softball team as they swept a doubleheader over GateWay Community College Tuesday afternoon, 11-2 and 10-2. The event marked the first time that YC has played at Roughrider Park this season. Yavapai is now 31-2 overall and 19-1 in league play and sit atop the ACCAC standings. GateWay falls to a measly 8-26 and 1-21.
Estela Pinon got the job done in the first game from the mound and at the plate. Pinon was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI’s and pitched the full five innings with 10 strikeouts and 0 earned runs. Vanessa House and Danielle Muniz also added two hits and Alexis Lawton was 1 for 2 with a home run and two runs knocked in.
In the late game, the opponent took an early 2-0 lead but YC responded and quickly scored the next 10 unanswered runs for the victory. Amelia Willadsen was the winning pitcher and was also 2 for 3 from the plate with a double and a home run. Sierra Rodriguez knocked two balls out of the park and plated six runners. Muniz and Brittany Keiser were each 1 for 2.
Yavapai plays host to conference powerhouse Phoenix College on Friday, March 18th. Earlier in the season, these two teams split a doubleheader with YC winning the first game 16-3 and Phoenix taking the second game 3-2. The doubleheader will start at 12:00 PM.
