Riders, Tribunes Split Twinbill
The Roughrider baseball team split a doubleheader with the Tribunes from Monroe Community College, NY. YC won the first game 10-5 and Monroe took the late game 6-5. Yavapai is now 22-10 overall. Monroe is now 6-3 overall.
Yavapai used two 5 run innings to propel them to the victory in the opener. Kenneth Gallegos, Ashton McCoy and Tyler Urps each had two hits apiece. Gallegos launched his first home run of the year.
Despite three Roughrider errors, Tony Vocca got the victory from the hill. Vocca allowed three hits and struck out five opponent batters.
In the nightcap, the Rider offense pounded out 11 hits but was only able to plate 5 runs. Going into the 7th inning, YC held a slim 5-4 margin. Andrew Walter recorded the first out of the inning but a costly error kept the Tribunes alive. With the bases loaded with two outs, the Tribunes’ Steve Renaud hit a bloop single to score the tying and winning runs. In their half of the seventh, YC failed to reach base.
Jordan Negrini and Ashton McCoy were a perfect 3 for 3 from the plate each. Josh Tate was 2 for 3 with two RBI’s. Unfortunately, the top four YC hitters of the order combined for a meager 2 for 20 from the plate.
Yavapai returns to conference action after an 11-day layoff. On Saturday, March 26th, the Roughriders will play Chandler/Gilbert Community College (9-14, 6-10) in Chandler. The game will begin at 12:00 PM.
