Lady Hoopsters Clinch Playoff Berth
With their victory Friday night over the visiting Gila Monsters from Eastern Arizona College, the Lady Rider basketball team clinched their 25th consecutive NJCAA Region I Playoff appearance. Yavapai outlasted the Monsters 77-72 and finishes the regular season with a 20-10 overall record and a 12-10 conference mark.
Playing in front of a capacity crowd, Kayla Williams paced the Roughriders with 21 points. Tesla Morgan came off of the bench to score 15 points including the final two free throws of the game with 6.4 seconds remaining to seal the victory. Jennifer Kelley chipped in 11 points with three of those points coming from the free throw line with less than a minute to go.
Yavapai waits for an opponent in the NJCAA playoffs. A coin toss will take place on Saturday between Central Arizona College and Arizona Western College for the top seed in the Region tournament. Both teams tied for first place with a 23-1 record with each team beating each other prompting the coin toss.
The first round event for the lady cagers will be on the road on Wednesday, March 2nd with the winner moving to the championship game on Friday, March 4th at the site of the highest seed.
