Baseball Splits Doubleheader

#15 Yavapai baseball split a non-conference home doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Roughrider Park against Community College of Southern Nevada.

The home team dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 2-1. Yavapai took a 1-0 lead going into the top of the seventh inning only to give up two runs and the game. Robbie Ingram got the no-decision after pitching 5.2 innings of shutout baseball. Miguel Silva (0-1) took the loss giving up both runs in 1.1 innings pitched. The Roughriders could only muster 2 hits in the game with Jonathan Rodriguez and Ashton McCoy getting 1 each. Nolan Clark had an RBI.

In the second game, the YC bats came alive pounding the Coyotes, 11-1. Yavapai scored 2 runs in the first inning, 4 runs in the third, 2 runs in the fourth and 1 run in the fifth before the opponent got on the board. Yavapai added two more runs in the seventh to get the run-rule victory, 11-1.

Ethen Leiter (1-0) pitched five solid innings to pick up the victory. The Indiana native scattered four hits and struck out five. Offensively, Dean Friedberg and Jonathan Rodriguez each hit home runs. Rodriguez was a perfect 4 for 4 from the plate with three runs knocked in. Friedberg plated two runners. Leiter helped his cause with two hits. As a team, YC had ten runs batted in.

The Roughriders are now 8-4 overall.

The squad resumes conference play on Saturday, February 19th at #5 Central Arizona College. The last time these two teams met was in the NJCAA Division I Region I Championship Series last May. Central Arizona won title 2 games to 1. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
