YC Splits Twinbill With Cochise
The Roughrider baseball team opened the ACCAC season on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader split with the visiting Apaches from Cochise College. YC won the opener 8-3 and stumbled in the nightcap, 10-6. Yavapai is now 7-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
In the first game, Sophomore Tony Vocca scattered six hits and 3 runs to record his second victory of the season. The NJCAA Division I saves leader, Miguel Silva, got his fifth save of the year pitching the final inning and a half.
Offensively, Josh Anderson was perfect from the plate going 4 for 4 with three runs scored, three runs batted in with two doubles. Ashton McCoy provided the punch going 2 for 3 with a double and a home run. Jonathan Rodriguez was 1 for 1 with an RBI on a double. Albert Alvarez and Tony Piazza each collected two hits a piece with Piazza knocking in two runs.
In the second game, Cochise put 6 runs on the board in the second inning to propel the visiting team to the 10-6 victory. Alex Miranda gave up all six runs and took the loss. Yavapai scored single runs in the third and fifth innings. Cochise tacked on two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings and the Roughriders threatened in their half of the ninth with four runs.
From the plate, Nolan Clark was 5 for 6 with a run scored and an RBI. Kenneth Gallegos was a perfect 3 for 3 and Alvarez and Anderson each had two hits.
YC returns to the diamond on Saturday, February 19th at Central Arizona College. This will be the first meeting between these two teams since the NJCAA Region I Championship Series last May. Central won the series 2-1 to advance to the District Championship. The twinbill will begin at 12:00 PM.
